On-Page SEO for blogs

On-Page Factors

On-Page factors are the aspects of a given web page that influence search engine ranking.

What are On-Page Factors?

There are several on-page factors that affect search engine rankings. These include:

Content of Page

The content of a page is what makes it worthy of a search result position. It is what the user came to see and is thus extremely important to the search engines. As such, it is important to create good content. So what is good content? From an SEO perspective, all good content has two attributes. Good content must supply a demand and must be linkable.
Good content supplies a demand:
Just like the world’s markets, information is affected by supply and demand. The best content is that which does the best job of supplying the largest demand. It might take the form of an XKCD comic that is supplying nerd jokes to a large group of technologists or it might be a Wikipedia article that explains to the world the definition of Web 2.0. It can be a video, an image, a sound, or text, but it must supply a demand in order to be considered good content.
Good content is linkable:
From an SEO perspective, there is no difference between the best and worst content on the Internet if it is not linkable. If people can’t link to it, search engines will be very unlikely to rank it, and as a result the content won’t drive traffic to the given website. Unfortunately, this happens a lot more often than one might think. A few examples of this include: AJAX-powered image slide shows, content only accessible after logging in, and content that can't be reproduced or shared. Content that doesn't supply a demand or is not linkable is bad in the eyes of the search engines—and most likely some people, too.

Title Tag

Title tags are the second most important on-page factor for SEO, after content. You can read more information about title tags here.

URL

Along with smart internal linking, SEOs should make sure that the category hierarchy of the given website is reflected inURLs.
The following is a good example of URL structure:
This URL clearly shows the hierarchy of the information on the page (history as it pertains to video games in the context of games in general). This information is used to determine the relevancy of a given web page by the search engines. Due to the hierarchy, the engines can deduce that the page likely doesn’t pertain to history in general but rather to that of the history of video games. This makes it an ideal candidate for search results related to video game history. All of this information can be speculated on without even needing to process the content on the page.
The following is a bad example of URL structure:
Unlike the first example, this URL does not reflect the information hierarchy of the website. Search engines can see that the given page relates to titles (/title/) and is on the IMDB domain but cannot determine what the page is about. The reference to “tt0468569” does not directly infer anything that a web surfer is likely to search for. This means that the information provided by the URL is of very little value to search engines.
URL structure is important because it helps the search engines to understand relative importance and adds a helpful relevancy metric to the given page. It is also helpful from an anchor text perspective because people are more likely to link with the relevant word or phrase if the keywords are included in the URL.

SEO Best Practice

Content pages are the meat of websites and are almost always the reason visitors come to a site. Ideal content pages should be very specific to a given topic—usually a product or an object—and be hyper-relevant.
The purpose of the given web page should be directly stated in all of the following areas:
  • Title tag
  • URL
  • Content of page
  • Image alt text
Here is an example of a well-laid-out and search engine–friendly web page. All of its on-page factors are optimized.
Good Optimization
The content page in this figure is considered good for several reasons. First, the content itself is unique on the Internet (which makes it worthwhile for search engines to rank well) and covers a specific bit of information in a lot of depth. If a searcher had question about Super Mario World, there is a good chance, that this page would answer their query.
Aside from content, this page is laid out well. The topic of the page is stated in the title tag (Super Mario World – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), URL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_World), the page's content (the page heading, "Super Mario World"), and within the alt text of every image on the page.
The following example is of a poorly optimized web page. Notice how it differs from the first example.
Poor Optimization
This figure shows a less search engine–friendly example of a content page targeting the term "Super Mario World." While the subject of the page is present in some of the important elements of the web page (title tag and images), the content is less robust than the Wikipedia example, and the relevant copy on the page is less helpful to a reader.
Notice that the description of the game is suspiciously similar to copy written by a marketing department. “Mario’s off on his biggest adventure ever, and this time he has brought a friend.” That is not the language that searchers write queries in, and it is not the type of message that is likely to answer a searcher's query. Compare this to the first sentence of the Wikipedia example: “Super Mario World is a platform game developed and published by Nintendo as a pack–in launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.”. In the poorly optimized example, all that is established by the first sentence is that someone or something called Mario is on an adventure that is bigger than his or her previous adventure (how do you quantify that?) and he or she is accompanied by an unnamed friend.
The Wikipedia example tells the reader that Super Mario World is a game developed and published by Nintendo for the gaming system Super Nintendo Entertainment System–the other example does not. Search results in both Bing and Google show the better optimized page ranking higher.

An Ideally Optimized Web Page

An ideal web page should do all of the following:
  • Be hyper-relevant to a specific topic (usually a product or single object)
    • Include subject in title tag
    • Include subject in URL
    • Include subject in image alt text
    • Specify subject several times throughout text content
  • Provide unique content about a given subject
  • Link back to its category page
  • Link back to its subcategory page (If applicable)
  • Link back to its homepage (normally accomplished with an image link showing the website logo on the top left of a page)
  • MozBar
The MozBar SEO toolbar lets you see relevant metrics in your browser as you surf the web.
  • Open Site Explorer
Open Site Explorer is a free tool that gives webmasters the ability to see up to 10,000 links to any site or page on the web via the Mozscape web index.
  • Term Target
Helps determine how targeted a particular page is for a specified keyword by analyzing a variety of factors.

  4. Social Bookmark The Blogs

  6. Consider Outsourcing

Quick & Dirty Search Engine Optimization

Before I get into building backlinks I want to say a quick word about search engine optimization. Optimizing your site will greatly increase the effectiveness of your backlink building efforts. Keywords in domain You must make sure that your keywords are in your domain. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then ideally your site would be PoodleMaincures.com or Poodle-Maincures.com Keywords in title tags You must make sure that your keywords are in your title tags. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then your title tags would look something like: <title>Poodle Manicures</h3> Keywords in h1 tags You must make sure that your keywords are in your h1 tags. For example if your site is about poodle manicures then your h1 tags would look something like: <h1>Poodle Manicures</h1> These are the basic things I recommend. Social Bookmarking Made Easy

This is the hardest step in the whole process but it well worth your time. Get Firefox First you need to use the Firefox web browser. We’ll be using some of the plugins for Firefox to get traffic. Download Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ The Power of OnlyWireOnlywire is afree paid service that allows you submit your site to 30 social bookmarking sites with a click of a button. Become A Top Commenter On Blogs

The basic idea The basic idea is to find blogs that have the “Top Commentator” widget installed. For example the blog QuickSprout ( http://www.quicksprout.com ) has this widget installed and you can see it on the right side of the main page:The people with the most comments on the blog are rewarded with a link back to their own site. Looking at the list above you can see that Prostate Problems (8)has placed 8 comments and gets a free backlink. The best part is this widget is shown on every page of the blog. So every page of this blog has a backlink to Prostate Problems. But how many pages does this blog have? We can get a count by going to Google and searching for:
site:quicksprout.com
This blog has 193 pages! If you’re one of the top commenters of this site then your backlink appears on 193 pages. How cool is that? A Quick Word About NoFollow There has recently been a lot of discussion about NoFollow and if it really matters. (For an explanation of NoFollow and why it is important to go to: http://nickstraffictricks.com/1168_why-nofollow-matters-and-how-to-find-blogs-that-dont-use-it/) Personally, I think the jury is still out on this. At this point I recommend becoming the top commentator only on blogs that do not use NoFollow. It certainly will not hurt you.

How to find these blogs

The toughest part of all of this is finding blogs with the top commentator widget and that are DoFollow. I spent several hours doing this and created a list of 30+blogs that have the top commentator widget and that are DoFollow and put the list at the bottom of this blog post.

Social Bookmark The Blogs

Once you are one of the top commentators on a blog your backlink will be on every one of their pages. Now you want the search engines to take notice. To do this you simply submit the blog’s home page or newest blog post to social bookmarking sites using OnlyWire. This should take about a minute of your time.

More Ideas

Another way to get a blog noticed by the search engine is to make a blogspot blog and on it link to all the blogs that now have backlinks to your site. Next submit the BlogSpot blog to OnlyWire.ExampleLet’s say you have a site called PoodleManicures.com and you have become the top commentator on blogs alpha.com and beta.com. You go to BlogSpot and signup for a free blog. To help the search engines index blogs alpha.com and beta.com (and see your backlinks) you place links to alpha.com and beta.com on your BlogSpot blog. Next you submit your BlogSpot blog to OnlyWire. You can use this same strategy with Squidoo lenses too. To do this you simply go to squidoo.com and make a free Squidoo lens. Next you link to blogs alpha.com and beta.com on your Squidoo lens. Next you submit your Squidoo lens to OnlyWire. Doing this will help ensure that the search engines come index blogs alpha.com and beta.com and see the backlinks to your site.

Consider Outsourcing

As time goes on you and you make money I recommend you invest some of your profits and hire someone to help you with your work. A lot of people suggest using elance or guru.com. I recommend first tying to hire a friend or family member you trust.

Before You Begin Commenting…

Before you begin there are several things you need to be aware of:
  1. Leave good comments You must leave good & thoughtful comments on a blog.  If you leave spammy comments then the blog owner will delete them and they may ban you from making future comments.  Join the community and contribute something.
  2. Be patient Some blogs require all comments to be approved by the blog owner before the comment shows up.  If this is the case then bookmark the page where you expect the comment to show up and revisit the page a day later.
  3. PageRank Changes I have sorted the blogs below according to PageRank.  PageRank does change periodically change and if one of the blogs below has a different PageRank then leave a comment at the bottom of this page.
  4. Consider Low PageRank Sites There is a lot more competition for the top commentator spots on blogs that have a high PageRank.  So you may want to start with blogs where it’s easy to become a top commentator.
  5. You may have to search The list of “Top Commentators” is usually on the right side of the blog, but once in a while it’s at the very bottom of the blog.  You may have to spend a minute searching for it.

Here a bunch of blogs that have the Top Commentator Widget and are DoFollow

(Note:  Sometimes blogs change the widget to nofollow or they’ll remove the widget completely.)

SEO On Page Optimization - The Basics

It’s a fact that if you get your SEO On Page Optimization right, your content will get seen by people who do not already know your blog. Without it, you will be relying solely on your friends, family and existing readership.
The i’s have been dotted, the t’s have been crossed and your final read through left a smile on your face. You have just written an excellent piece of content for your website and you are done! In your opinion, this probably surpasses all your other material for sheer style and content! This will definitely be a hit with your audience and guaranteed to get heaps of traffic from the search engines!
You publish the post and wait. Then wait and wait some more. But nothing happens. Your loyal readers enjoyed it but that anticipated flood of additional traffic didn’t happen. So what went wrong?
You forgot your on page optimization!
Don’t despair because in this post I will show you exactly how to make sure that your content can be made visible to both people and search engine spiders. This will show you how to get your blog noticed by people who do not know your blog yet.
The good news is that both parties, spiders and humans, need pretty much the same thing: content relevant to the keywords or phrases they used to search.

SEO On Page Optimization Best Practices

A best practice for people and spider satisfaction is to focus each page or post of your website on a single concept, keyword, key phrase, or set of related terms. In general, the keywords or key phrases that you choose to target should be ones that search engine users would type into a search engine.

The core SEO on page factors are as follows

HTML page Title: Include the exact keyword phrase in the HTML page title. Do your best to include the key phrase at the beginning of the title or within the first 65 characters. E.g. the title of this page is “SEO On page Optimization - The Basics” with the key phrase being “SEO On Page Optimization”
Page Content: Include the exact key word phrase and possible variations in the body of the text of the page a few times, while keeping the content relevant and human reader friendly.
With regards to the exact number of times you insert it, as far as I can tell there is no definitive answer but common answers are in the realm of 3-5% of the content should have your keyword.
DON’T fall foul of keyword stuffing. This means including your key word or phrase all over the place. The spiders will see this and penalise you for it. A good rule of thumb is always to proof read your document out loud. If it sounds spammy then it probably is and you should change it by reducing the number of keywords.
Headings: Incorporate the target key phrase into heading tags (particularly the <h1> tag) wherever possible.
On this page the <H1> tag is red, <H2> tag is maroon, <H3> is orange. Don’t feel that you have to put <h2> and <h3> tags in each and every post. Use them where it is relevant and aids the flow of the page.
Internal Links: To explain the thought process behind this I want you to consider this: You are driving in your car, in an area you don’t know too well, you take a turn to the left and drive on for 2 or 3 minutes, then all of a sudden you hit a dead end. There is no way out. You have to turn around and go out the same way you came in. The road you drove down was pretty useless.
seo on page optimization - dead endThe search engines’ goal is to provide their users the best possible search experience. The search engines will send their spiders to check out your content. The spider crawls around but once he gets there, if there is nowhere else for him to go, no further information on the same theme for it to consume, he gets bored and frustrated and reports back in a negative manner. Just like you would if you went down a dead end!
Give the reader further relevant information to consume, for instance insert a link to other pieces of content on your web site or point them to relevant websites where they can get further information.
For example, here are some further links to what is Internet Search Engine Optimization and how to improve search engine rankings-10 ways to get more visitors.
Image alt attributes: Image alt attributes are important for the visually impaired. If a user moved their cursor over the image their speaker would inform them that it was an image of spider and would also include the key phrase “SEO on page optimization”.
Use descriptive phrases in alt attributes of images and image links, incorporating the keywords where relevant.
Page URL: Incorporate the target keyword or key phrase in your URL. If your page is talking about Poodle training and your URL is mentioning Dog care then there is quite a significant difference between the content you advertise and what you are displaying. Make sure it is relevant.
There you have it, On Page SEO Optimization – the Basics. This will act as a starting point for you to entice people from the search engines who are not aware of your site to become loyal readers and potential business partners. The underlying theme of this post is to be relevant and provide engaging content to your community.

How to SEO Website, High Rank, and Top 1 in Google, Complete!

How to SEO Website, High Rank, and Top 1 in Google, Complete!

In my article this time, I want to talk about how to SEO a website and make it rank in Google (or at least the top four).

I know SEO is probably the thing that is not easy (maybe even intimidating) for most of you remember the number that need to be studied.

Five years ago when I used to be just starting out, for my own SEO it did seem a bit mysterious.

But after a few years to create a website, ranking it me, and has its own system to get high rankings in google constantly, I understand there was science behind search engine optimization.

Before I begin with a lengthy explanation of how me to download my websites SEO and ranking making one (or at least the last four pages) on Google, I would like to make a disclaimer first ...

That by following the guide I wrote this, I do not guarantee you can get high ranking in Google.

How to SEO Website, High Rank, and Top 1 in Google, Complete!
How to SEO Website, High Rank, and Top 1 in Google, Complete!

The results you'll get will depend on your experience, your instincts, your knowledge, and money that you have in your pockets to buy the things needed to be able to rank high in Google (yups, SEO is not free).

And that even though I've tried my best to provide any information as to post this, I am still rather this is NOT an SEO expert knows everything.

Risks to use the information in this page 100% is in your hands.

And with that disclaimer, let's start the guide

SEO guide us in this time, I will talk about my style of SEO techniques.

And to be honest, I was fairly complex technique - you may not understand some of the many terms in this guide, and process optimization which I always do my keyword research based on strong, so do not carelessly optimization.

Broadly speaking, this is what I usually do:

Where to start
Everyday people search the Internet for solutions to their problems.  Your quest for a top ranking in Google begins with knowing exactly what problem your website solves.

And you should be able to explain the problem that your website solves in 1 sentence.

Example: Nick’s Traffic Tricks show you how to get more traffic to your site.

Example: Bob’s website shows you how to get your poodle to stop peeing on your Persian rugs.

Example: Jim’s website shows you how to win a llama spitting contest.

If you don’t know what problem your website solves then you are in trouble, and all the keyword research & search engine optimization in the world won’t help.

A quick word about advertising

Most of you want to rank high in Google so you can get more traffic and ultimately make more sales. And knowing exactly what problem that your website solves will make it 100 times easier to find targeted and high converting advertisements for your site.

Generate a keyword list
You need to generate a list of keywords and keyword phrases that best describe the types of searches that your target audience will be typing into Google.

For example, if your site is about how to jump higher then your list may include:

jump
jumping
jump higher
jump height
increase jump
maximize jump
Try to come up with 4 to 10 keywords or phrases for your list.

You might also use an online thesaurus to come up with synonyms for your keywords.

Don’t worry if your list is not very long. In the next section I will show you a tool to generate a ton more keywords.

Keyword research part 1
Once you have a list keywords that you would like to possibly rank for it’s time to do some keyword research using Google’s free keyword research tool.

It’s very easy to use and I recommend sorting your search results by Global Monthly Search Volume. And what you’re looking for are relevant keywords that have the highest number of searches.

I made a quick video showing you exactly how to do this:
Keyword Research Part 1: Finding keywords with lots of searches

Keyword research part 2
In this phase of keyword research we want to determine how valuable different keywords are.

For example, if I had a website about dogs I would probably find that keywords related to stop barking dogs would be more valuable than keywords like dog tap dance lessons.

How to actually do this research is best explained in a video that I made:
Keyword Research Part 2: Finding keywords that are profitable

Keyword research part 3
The last step in your keyword research is to determine how much competition each keyword has.

Using the Google keyword tool you want to determine how many websites are competing for each keyword in your list.

The easiest way to explain how to do this is with a video I made:
Keyword Research Part 3: Evaluating Keyword Competition

Keyword research conclusion
In summary the keywords that you select for your website should match ALL of the following 4 criteria:

Keyword is related to your target audience
Keyword has enough searches each month to make it worth your time
Keyword is valuable enough
Keyword has an amount of competition that you are comfortable with
I did an experiment

A while back I did an experiment to see how fast I could rank for a silly keyword that had virtually no competition.

So I made a blog post with the title Biggest Absolute Failure. I knew that my blog platform would put the keyword phrase Biggest Absolute Failure in all the right places and I waited to see how long it would take Google to rank me for that particular keyword.

When I checked my rankings a couple hours later I was surprised to find that Google had ranked my blog post #1 for Biggest Absolute Failure.

I was excited about this but quickly realized that ranking for this keyword didn’t help me get targeted traffic. The phrase Biggest Absolute Failure wasn’t relevant to my niche, it wasn’t valuable, and no one was searching for it.

So when striving to rank high in Google make sure you are selecting keywords that match the 4 criteria in the list above.

Finding balance

Most likely you are not going to find the perfect keyword with tons of searches and no competition. Instead you’re going to have to find a balance between these things.

Avoid vague keywords

A lot of people want to rank for the keyword computers or real estate or dogs. The trouble with these keywords is that they are super competitive and you really have no idea what a person is really searching for.

For example, if someone searches for computers they might be looking for:

parts for computers
buy computers
computer repair shops in St. Louis
computer programming languages
the history of computers
news about computers
schools and classes about computers
movies about computers
Each of these terms has a very different audience and you have no idea what someone is really looking.  So do yourself a favor and avoid vague keywords.

I covered this in more detail in:
2 Reasons Your Keywords Suck (And How To Fix Them)

But Nick, all this keyword research stuff sounds hard and time-consuming. I just want to rank high in Google and think about this stuff later.

Figuring out what problem your website solves and keyword research are the 2 most difficult things you will do to rank high in Google.

But they are the most important!

The domain that you purchase for your website will depend entirely on the keywords that you choose. If you skip keyword research you will buy the wrong domain and it will make it far more difficult to rank high.

Websites don’t just rank high in Google; they rank high for a specific keyword phrase. So make sure you rank high for the right keyword phrases.

More tools and resources

There are tons of keyword research tools and tutorials available to you that I did not cover in this post. To learn more about keyword research go check out Keyword Research 101.

Buy the right domain
Once you figure out what you’re ideal keyword is you need to get the domain that has those keywords in it.

For example if your target keyword phrase is
how to train hippopotamus ballerinas then ideally you would purchase the domain HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com.

Sometimes your ideal domain is taken so you may have to put dashes in between words. Another option is to put a filler word at the beginning or the end of your domain.

For example, if HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com was not available you might try

A1HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com
BestHowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com
Get a .com

Whenever possible you should buy the .com. In my experience domains that end with .com or .org or .net rank better in Google and get more traffic.

I favor .com domains over .org & .net because of word-of-mouth marketing. For example, if I have a friend who wants to train his hippopotamus to be a ballerina I will refer him to my site HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas and he will usually assume that it is a .com.  If instead my website is HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.org my friend has to remember one more thing about my website and is likely to forget that my domain ends in .org.

But Nick, I already spent $10 on a domain. Do I really have to get a different one to rank in Google?

No you don’t, but it will be a lot harder to rank high with a crappy domain.

It’s kind of like running a marathon and asking, “If someone tied my hands behind my back would I still be able to complete the marathon?’  You could, in theory, still finish it but running a marathon is hard enough without any extra handicaps.

And ranking high in Google is a lot like running a marathon; it takes time, effort, and preparation.  Why would you want to make this even harder?

Search engine optimization
Just about everyone has heard about search engine optimization by now. So I am going to skip the nitty-gritty details and just go over a few highlights.

Search engine optimization can be broken into 3 basic components:

Keyword research
This was covered at great length in the above sections.
On page optimization
You want your keyword phrase in your domain as well as your title tags, h1 tags, etc. (If any of this is new to you then go read Your Grandma’s Guide To Search Engine Optimization and Keywords)
Back link building
You need to have other websites link to your website because each link is like a vote. And the more votes you get the better. We will go more in depth into this in a later section.
